We ran across this trailer for the new art installation, The Enclave, yesterday, and we could scarcely believe our eyes.
[Warning: parts of the trailer are extremely disturbing, although nothing is graphically shown in the video. Also there’s some profanity.]
The movie is made with a photographic process developed by the US Government in the early 40s to make enemy camouflage visible. Plants’ chlorophyll would reflect the sun’s UV radiation in pink, while painted camouflage would not.
The artist uses this process to bring awareness to the decades-old civil war in the Congo, where war has become a way of life.
One passage of the artist’s commentary especially caught me:
Of primary importance to me is beauty… It’s the sharpest tool in the box. If you’re trying to make people feel something, if you make it beautiful, people will sit up and listen.
